What is Grow a Row?

  • Grow a Row is a program run in many communities across Canada. It promotes edible landscapes in urban areas while teaching community members about how food grows. It also works to bridge the gap between those growing food, and those who have limited access to fresh produce. Participants are encouraged to Grow a Row of vegetables, herbs, or fruit in their backyard gardens, containers or planter boxes and share the harvest with our neighbours in need by donating the produce to local food banks and meal programs.
  • Last year, almost 3000 pounds of produce was donated to local food programs through Grow a Row. Over 50 participants registered, and several organizations participated in growing vegetables including the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit, the City of North Bay, North Bay Police Service, and the North Bay Fire Department
  • Click here to register for the Grow a Row campaign. By registering, community members have the option of receiving a selection of seeds to start their growing endeavors, and organizations can receive a lawn sign to promote the program as well.

Supporting Organizations

“The food bank looks forward to seeing donations of fresh produce again this year through the Grow a Row program. It’s great to have the opportunity to send fresh vegetables home with our clients.” – Amber Livingstone, North Bay Food Bank.

“Community members utilizing emergency food programs often do not have access to fresh, local produce. Grow a Row is a way for those fortunate enough to have an abundance of nutritious, local food to share the harvest with those in need.” – the Gathering Place Community Food Centre

Grow a Row is a great way to promote edible landscapes and teach community members about how vegetables and fruit grow. We are asking more local businesses and organizations to participate this year to set an example of how beautiful edible plants can be while supporting our local emergency food programs.”- Erin Reyce, Public Health Dietitian, North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit

“The Salvation Army is excited to be a part of Grow a Row this year. The program will help provide fresh vegetables to those we serve who may not be otherwise able to afford them. Being a part of this program will make a difference in the quality of food we offer in our food bank.”- Kayt Elliot, Salvation Army North Bay
